India, the beautiful and headstrong sister of Come the Night's hero, Luc Delamere, fell in love with the rakish Devlyn Carlisle when they were just children. Innocent love bloomed into deepest passion when they reconnected as adults. But soon after the two are joined in a secret wedding bond, the Napoleonic Wars tear them apart. Then, betrayed by a comrade-in-arms, Devlyn is pronounced dead.
India swears to continue her life alone, without the only love she's ever known. But now he's back – with the cold eyes of a stranger. Plunged deep into the mystery to discover who betrayed Devlyn, India vows to make the lost earl remember all they once shared, no matter how dangerous to her reputation – and her heart.

I would have expected an author like Christina Skye to understand the importance of pacing, showing and not telling, and the importance of setting up characters before breaking them. But that didn't happen here. Now maybe because this is a second book in a series we are supposed to already know the characters, but as a new reader all I got was a heap ton of info dump and not much that reeled me in.Sure India sounds on paper like a great heroine, but she's a broken shell at the start of the book who broods and mopes better than Angel from Buffy. I was sick of that 20 years ago. Then we get to the hero who is completely unlikable. Yes he's got amnesia (or not as the case may be!), but because of where the story started I didn't care. In my mind he didn't deserve India ad nothing that happened changed that view.
We needed to have a reason to care, show the characters happy before putting them through the conflict. Oh sure, we got told it in a seemingly endless number of flashbacks, but it didn't have the same impact. The overall story line was predictable. I could point out each and every beat and knew what trope was going to happen next. It was formulaic. Too formulaic. Even the inevitable twist was predictable and overused...especially in romance. And it's unbelievable every bloody time.
The only reason this gets three stars is for the minor characters especially the grandmother and the writing is solid and well edited. This isn't what I would expect from such a well known and respected author and it makes me leery to read her other works.

Come the Dawn The Dangerous Delameres Book 2 edition by Christina Skye Romance eBooks Reviews
This author writes very similar to one of my favorite all time historical authors (Kathleen Woodiwiss), this book was an excellent historical romantic suspense. The character of India was witty, head strong, and independent with a loving heart. The character of Dev was cautious, loyal, and brave with a loving heart as well. The secondary characters of India's grandmother, the Duchess, and her brother, Ian, were dimensional and added a witty undertone to the story. The story held more than one plot "twist" that kept readers guessing as to what would happen by the conclusion of this book. I am truly thankful for finding this book. While it is an "oldie," it ranks as one of my top 10 books read this year.
Often I find e-books need editing attention. Usually, it is of the spelling--grammar variety. However, this one needed editing of the storyline, particularly toward to finish. I almost felt I was reading the rough draft and Skye never got back to it. It was particularly noticeable with the villainess character, Helena Marchmont. Her unsavory relationship with one of the vilains (and the related murder) were left dangling with a change of scene. She dropped in for a visit with Alexis and then sort of vaporized. The timeline seemed truncated as well. There hardly seemed time for India to have had a baby who lived however briefly, died , was buried and mourned for a year or more before the story began in 1816. All that being said, I might have enjoyed reading the finished product rather than the first draft.
Enjoyed the first book, but with the second book the author was able to include something for everyone in a surprisingly coherent and wonderful way. There's historical romance, mystery, adventure, tragedy (a little) and even sweetly done hints of the supernatural.
It's a spicy, slightly steamy love story between a strong independent heroine who we met some years before in book 1, she's now 20 and has met our Hero, the man of her dreams only to lose him to war.
Until he reappears alive but without his memories, but of course there's more to the story and in this case the story includes orphaned children, missing jewels, eccentric families and political spy rings, along with the reconciliation of our lost lovers, really what more could you ask? Oh yes, pirates! And ghosts! There are also pirates and ghosts! Yet somehow it all works and builds to an enjoyable and charming conclusion.
The characters are well drawn and entertaining and the situations are clever and though often outlandish are still enjoyable reading.
Christina Skye writes a heartfelt and adventurous story. She writes about a heroine who is broken and lost because of tremendous lose and devastation. India, the heroine has so many emotions and layers that the author does an excellent job peeling back. You see India as a lost soul carrying around pain and secrets, then you see her become angry and protective as well as determined. She writes of a hero who loses a part of himself after battle and after being presumed dead he comes back a different person. Devlyn has many secrets that need to be discovered and protected at the same time. The secondary characters are just as multi-dimensional as the hero and heroine.
This is the second book in the series but can definitely be read as a standalone. I haven’t read the first book yet but I have already purchased it and will be reading it very soon. I am thoroughly looking forward to reading the next book in the series as well as more stories by this author.
The conundrum that is Christine Skye is that while she writes practically flawlessly about interesting people under interesting circumstances, she also tends to let the story bog down in the middle. It makes me want to quit reading yet force myself to go on just to find out how everything turns out.
And, by bog down, I mean too much drawn-out detail/info. Or, could it be too much dwelling/refresher?
Whatever it is, it is the only thing I don't like about the author's style.
I preferred Book 1 to this Book 2, and am still interested to hear Ian's story if and when it gets published.
Perhaps I should try reading a Roberta Helmer novel for comparison purposes.
